Steel Frog v. imdb, 2010

Last week I was accused of not liking anything.

That’s not fair; clearly I enjoyed at least one of the twentysomething films I saw in August. So, for kicks, I did a scatter plot of my rating against the imdb rating for the films I saw in 2010. I had to leave some of the more obscure ones off for the sake of room. I included a “Best fit” line. It’s fair to say that most everything above the line I think the general public has overrated and most everything below the line I think the public has underrated. Sometimes, I admit, you guys are right.

There’s no way you’re going to agree with all of my ratings; no more so than you’d agree with imdb. It seems clear, however, that I do not hate everything. In fact, my pattern is similar to yours – the good films are rated as good, the bad as bad. Sure, a 5.2 on imdb is a “1” to me, but I don’t hate everything.

Among the funny things on this chart (to me, at least) is the fact that both 2010 Denzel Washington films, Unstoppable and The Book of Eli, currently rate 6.8 on imdb. Naturally, I gave them the same thing as well, three stars.  I think we’re all dead center bullseye on Denzel.
