Fear Street: Prom Queen

The one big plus I’ll give this film is the appeal to any of us who ever wanted to cross Mean Girls and Friday the 13th. Not that such hasn’t already been done. Carrie was killing Mean Girls decades before the term existed. I’m just saying there’s some catharsis for anybody who ever felt run over in high school. Mind you, it needs to stay on screen and go no further. Cuz when this feeling gets out of control, things like MAGA happen.

.
It’s 1988 and Shadyside High is ready from Prom Season. It’s like Hunting Season, only the outfits are more fashionable. A “Wolfpack” of Mean Girls runs the school, but we’re following outsider Lori (India Fowler). She seems cool enough to us, but has a bad rep at school cuz her mom killed her dad.

Oh, that old saw.

Well, it just so happens that murder is in season, especially for some dude who goes around dressing like the blood red Gorton’s Fisherman. Seriously, take the killer from I Know What You Did Last Summer and this guy, multiply each by sixteen, and you’ve got a pretty good human chess set.

Well, red fisherman is gonna leave a stain on this prom, I can tell you. And this school already has enough pranksters: check out the girl who “cut off her own arm” during class. At least hers was fake. Don’t worry, blood fans, Fear Street: Prom Queen has a lot of dismemberment. You’ll get your limb-severing jollies.

There’s a ton of “waiting to be killed” in this film, which … bites. I mean, sure, I hate these characters and want them all to die, but what’s the fun in them just standing there, huh? I found Prom Queen bloody and sadly predictable, a far cry from the innovative horror of the past few years.

There once was a coed named Lori
Who embodied a most tragic story
For prom, she was keen
To become the school queen
Even if the coronation was gory
