An open letter to the fans of Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life

I fear you understand nothing. Not.one.single.solitary.thing. As relates to movies, that is. I make no judgment about your comprehension of other subjects – although evidence suggests this can’t be an isolated phenomenon. As per movies – you don’t understand their role as an art form, their role in society, their ability to captivate or entertain … nothing. You don’t get any element of what movies are about, nor what they’re supposed to be about.

I know you exist because as of this writing, The Tree of Life currently rates 7.6 on IMDb, with over 23,000 votes. Neither exist in this world that many souls with an obscene sense of humor, nor relatives of Terrence Malick. Over 6,000 of you even rated this film a “10”. Oh boy. 10 is – for want of a better word – “good.” You know that, right? There is no higher rating on IMDb, which suggests that in your opinion, this is the ultimate expression of art in movie form. One wonders what would constitute a bad movie in your mind – one with a plot? One with characters you enjoy? One where something happens? One that isn’t two hours too long? I could have never seen a film in my entire life and yet still found this one lacking. As is your good sense, sir or madam.

Stay away from me.
