The Best You Can

What is the cutoff age for sexting? Asking for a friend. Seriously, what is the age? Because there is one. Twenties, unmarried, young and flirty, is a wonderful age to exchange hot messages with a potential partner. Eighties … not so much. What is the cutoff, huh?

I ask because sixty-something security guard Stan Olszewski (Kevin Bacon) begins sexting in this film, runs out of steam, and falls asleep. Yeah, that tracks. This is not a game for sixty-somethings, dude. Of course, the person he belongs with in the film, Cynthia Rand (Kevin’s real life wife Kyra Sedgwick) is probably also beyond sexting age. Luckily, she seems less likely to indulge in the first place. Humorous as this might have been, maybe this is all for the better.

Stan and Cythia meet because of business. Stan foils a home robbery attempt, sparing the Rands, Cynthia and Warren (91-year-old Judd Hirsch). Meanwhile, Stan has no set relationship of his own, but he likes flirting with the near teen who rings him up at the grocery store.

The film NEEDS us to see how wrong this is – Warren is too old for Cynthia. Stan is too old for checker girl. If only these two could find common ground … like if Stan suddenly had a cancer scare and doctor Cynthia just happens to be losing Warren to old age.

The result is both cute and scary. I mean, awwwww, isn’t it adorable when old people get together? And, eeek, looks what they get together about – cancer and prostate exams and sad reminiscing. Good God, this is my fate, isn’t it?

The Best You Can didn’t quite sugar-coat anything. It is well-aware of the age of all of its characters and what kind of problems that summons on its own. So, kudos for being realistic. OTOH, do we really need to see Kevin Bacon romance his own wife … again? Maybe if you’re really bored.

There once was a mall cop named Stan
For old age, he had nary a plan
Long came his Cyn
And he jumped on in
Making us wonder is that “The Best You Can?”
