The Best Films of 2019

I’m in no mood to beat around the bush. Let’s get down to it already. What were the best films of 2019? These are the honorable mentions:

Once Upon A Time … in Hollywood

Like almost all Tarantino, I appreciate Once Upon more as time passes. If it had come out last January instead of last July, it might have made the top 10. :eyeroll:

They Shall Not Grow Old

A wistful reminiscence of trench warfare brought to you by Peter Jackson and the Wingnut documentary restoration team.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco

This is my homer shout-out of the year. As the film does deserve more recognition than it got, however, I be not ashamed.

Ruben Brandt, Collector

I can’t remember the last film I would honestly describe as “funky.”

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

With all due respect to the Vast & Spurious franchise, John Wick has the best action going these days.

Abominable

“Yi, did you take the yeti for a walk?”
“Aw, mom, do I have to?”
“Yes.”

Dogs Don’t Wear Pants

It’s not about dogs, and it sure ain’t about pants. This is a Finnish film where a single-father falls for a dominatrix. If you’re bored of American film, this is a great place to start.

Masquerade Hotel

A posh Japanese Hotel sets the scene for a murder to be …unless the undercover concierge has any say. Can his polished role model teach him how to perform his role? Which job is harder: detecting or deferring?

Marriage Story

I’ll give this much to Scarlett Johansson – while I don’t think she deserved two Oscar nominations, this year she played two characters you don’t actually want to be. Marriage Story begins with counseling and ends with lawyers; there’s no part of that anyone wants.
