If I were a kid, I’d LOVE Shaun the Sheep. Absolutely LOVE. No two ways about it. Clever, cute, underrated, and functionally mute. Doesn’t go off telling his life story or any shit like that. No need to taunt anybody or exacerbate personality conflicts. Sure, he’s gonna have issues. All geniuses do. But he’s not looking for them and I would love the shenanigans he and his flock get up to.
And I love the Claymation.
I am no
longer a kid, however, and I find Shaun the Sheep clever, yet, sadly, kinda meh.
For the sake of the child around you, do pretend I absolutely LOVED Shaun and his newest adventure, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, cuz I think your kid may love it to. Oh, and if you’re going to introduce your small child to horror, this might be exactly the film to do so, cuz while there are definitely elements of horror in Mossy Bottom, it isn’t really scary and nobody has to die.
Shaun is a clever little sheepling on an English farm. ‘Nuff said. On this farm, the sheep are all alphas in sheep clothing. They’re all smarter than the occupants of
the house, but choose to behave as if they are normal sheep. In this episode, they are trying to hide their pumpkin-growing proclivities in time for Halloween. Unfortunately, they hide them so well that the farmer accidentally destroys their crop. Flying into action, Shaun turns mad scientist and invents a super-growth formula, which is fantastic until the Farmer tries to secure a date with the sheep doctor, and mistakes Shaun’s growth formula for hair cream.
*poof* Insta-yeti!
This is eight degrees of silly. We all know this. The rest of the film is dealing with the laconic Farmer and his follicle follies. I don’t see this movie curing cancer or solving world peace, but it should amuse a child or two. And, hey, it’s Shaun the Sheep. You knew what you were getting into. And you won’t be disappointed when you get it. There are a few adult-humor jokes here just in case you’re stuck watching without a phone.
I don’t think there is very much to this film, BUT 1) It’s hard not to like Shaun the Sheep and his adventures. 2) It’s hard not to like Aardman animation and 3) This beats the HELL out of Hotel Transylvania and all of those stupid Hotel Transylvania sequels.
There once was a farm full of sheep
One particular had an intellect deep
But in saving the day
He made “master” pay
All without a word or a *bleep*
